STORY RECAP

What happened in Season 1?

Carrie Mathison, a CIA case officer, was informed by an Iraqi informant that an American prisoner of war had been turned by al-Qaeda. Ten months later, Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody was rescued from an al-Qaeda compound after eight years in captivity. Carrie suspected that Brody was the turned POW and began surveilling his household, discovering evidence that he may be communicating coded messages. As Brody reunited with his family, Carrie shared her concerns with her mentor, Saul Berenson. As the season progressed, Carrie's surveillance of Brody revealed that he had converted to Islam and was hiding secrets about his time in captivity. Brody's family life became increasingly complicated, with his wife Jessica's affair with his friend Mike Faber causing tension. Meanwhile, Carrie's investigation led her to Lynne Reed, a CIA informant who was later assassinated, and to Raqim Faisel, a man who bought a house near an airport with a direct line of sight to a landing pad for Marine One. Carrie's relationship with Brody became personal when they met at a veterans' support group, and they eventually had an affair. However, Carrie's suspicions about Brody's loyalty persisted, and she discovered that he had been in contact with Abu Nazir, the leader of al-Qaeda. It was later revealed that Tom Walker, another Marine captured alongside Brody, was actually the turned POW and was working with al-Qaeda. As the season drew to a close, Brody was approached by Vice President Walden to run for public office, and he accepted. Carrie and Saul discovered that there was a mole within the government and that Brody was being manipulated by Abu Nazir. In the season finale, Brody wore a suicide vest to a policy summit, but relented from detonating it after hearing his daughter's pleas to come home. Instead, he met with Walker and killed him, revealing that he had become a mole for al-Qaeda. Carrie, meanwhile, underwent electroconvulsive therapy for her bipolar disorder and realized that Brody had a personal connection to Abu Nazir's son, Issa.
