In Mission: Impossible, IMF agent Jim Phelps and his team, including Ethan Hunt, are sent to Prague to stop rogue agent Alexander Golitsyn from stealing the CIA's NOC list. However, the team is killed, and Ethan is left as the only survivor. As Ethan delves deeper, he discovers that the operation was a setup to lure out a mole within the IMF, with Golitsyn's help. Ethan eventually realizes that Jim Phelps is the mole, and that his wife Claire had faked her own death. With the help of Luther Stickell and initially Franz Krieger, Ethan obtains the authentic NOC list and exposes Jim as the mole. In the end, Jim and Krieger are killed, and Ethan is left unsure about returning to the team, but is offered a chance to take on a new mission as team leader.
