In The Matrix, hacker Thomas Anderson, known as Neo, learns from Morpheus and Trinity that ordinary human life is a simulation maintained by intelligent machines. Morpheus believes Neo is the One, who can alter the Matrix and potentially end the machines' domination. After crew member Cypher betrays the resistance, Morpheus is captured by Agent Smith. Neo and Trinity rescue him, and Neo survives being shot by Smith, awakening powers that let him perceive the Matrix as code and destroy Smith's apparent form. In The Matrix Reloaded, the machines send a vast force of Sentinels toward Zion, the last major human stronghold. Neo and Trinity are now in love. The Oracle tells Neo that he must reach the Source of the Matrix with the help of the Keymaker, a captive of the powerful program known as the Merovingian. Meanwhile, the seemingly defeated Smith has become a self-replicating rogue program. He copies himself into a human resistance fighter named Bane, giving him a presence in the real world. After a dangerous operation involving several resistance crews, the Keymaker opens a path to the Source but is killed. Neo meets the Architect, the creator of the Matrix, who reveals that the prophecy of the One is part of a recurring system of control. Zion has been destroyed and rebuilt through earlier cycles, and Neo is expected to reset the Matrix and select survivors to rebuild it again. Instead, Neo rejects this plan to save Trinity, who has entered the Matrix and been shot by an Agent. He catches her as she falls, removes the bullet and restarts her heart. Although the Architect warned of catastrophic consequences, the Matrix does not immediately collapse. Back in the real world, Sentinels destroy the Nebuchadnezzar, but its crew escapes. Neo unexpectedly disables approaching machines without entering the simulation, then falls unconscious. Another ship rescues the survivors. The crew learns that an attempted defense of Zion has been devastated by a prematurely triggered electromagnetic pulse. Neo remains in a coma, while the Smith-controlled Bane lies unconscious nearby, leaving the resistance vulnerable on both fronts.

KNOW BEFORE WATCHING

A few things worth knowing first

LORE

The Source

The Source is the central system associated with the Matrix and its machine-controlled infrastructure. Access to it is treated as exceptionally important, although its operation and purpose are not fully understood by most inhabitants.

LORE

The Merovingian

The Merovingian is an influential program associated with information trading and programs that no longer fit neatly into the Matrix system. His name refers to a historical Frankish dynasty, but the character is part of the films' fictional world.

LORE

Sentinels

Sentinels, sometimes called Squiddies, are mobile machine hunters that patrol the physical world. Their many-limbed design allows them to swarm vessels and pursue humans outside the digital simulation.

CONCEPT

Precognition

Precognition means apparent knowledge of events before they happen. It is a familiar idea in mythology, science fiction and debates about fate and free will; it is not an established scientific ability.

TERM

Limbo

Limbo is a term for an uncertain or transitional state. In religious and literary traditions it can describe an existence between recognized destinations, while speculative fiction sometimes adapts it to spaces outside ordinary rules.
