In The Matrix, Thomas Anderson discovers that the world he knows is a machine-controlled simulation. Freed by Morpheus and Trinity, he becomes Neo, the figure whom Morpheus believes can change humanity's fate. A betrayal leads to Morpheus's capture, but Neo and Trinity rescue him. When Agent Smith shoots Neo, he unexpectedly revives with the power to perceive and alter the Matrix's code, defeating Smith's apparent form. In The Matrix Reloaded, a huge machine army advances on the human city of Zion. Neo learns from the Oracle that he must reach the Source, and discovers that the supposedly defeated Smith is now a rogue program able to copy himself into others, including the human Bane. The Architect reveals that the Matrix and the prophecy of the One have been used in repeated cycles to control the human rebellion. Rather than follow the prescribed reset, Neo chooses to save Trinity from death. Outside the simulation, he mysteriously disables Sentinels with his mind and falls into a coma while Zion faces invasion. In The Matrix Revolutions, Neo's consciousness is stranded in a program-controlled transit station until Morpheus, Trinity and Seraph secure his release. Smith spreads through the Matrix, threatening both humanity and the machines. As Zion mounts a desperate defense against the Sentinels, Neo and Trinity travel toward the Machine City aboard the Logos. Bane, controlled by Smith, attacks them and blinds Neo, but Neo kills him and continues using a new ability to perceive machine energy. Their ship crashes on arrival, and Trinity dies from her injuries. Neo reaches the machine leader and offers to eliminate Smith in exchange for peace and an end to the attack on Zion. Reconnected to the Matrix, Neo fights Smith, who has assimilated nearly everyone there, including the Oracle. Recognizing that force alone will not defeat him, Neo allows Smith to assimilate him. Through Neo's connection, the machines destroy Smith and his copies. Neo apparently dies, the Sentinels withdraw from Zion, and the Matrix is restored. The Architect agrees that people who wish to leave the simulation may be freed. The human-machine war ends in a fragile truce, though the Matrix itself remains in existence.

CONCEPT

Derealization

Derealization is an experience in which surroundings feel unreal, distant or dreamlike even though the person can recognize that this is a change in perception. It is a psychological phenomenon, not evidence that the outside world is artificial.

CONCEPT

Cognitive Dissonance

Cognitive dissonance is the discomfort that can arise when beliefs, experiences or actions conflict. People may respond by reassessing evidence, changing a belief or finding ways to reconcile the contradiction.

TERM

Modal

In computing, a modal is an interface element or state that temporarily changes how a user interacts with a system. The term also has meanings in logic and philosophy involving possibility and necessity; technical uses depend on context.

Simulacrum

A simulacrum is an image, imitation or representation whose relationship to an original may be uncertain. Philosophers and cultural critics use the term to discuss how representations can shape what people understand as real.

CONCEPT

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is a tradition of psychological theory and therapy associated with Sigmund Freud, emphasizing unconscious processes, conflict and interpretation. Its concepts have influenced literature and film, though many of its specific claims remain scientifically disputed.
