The Avengers, released in 2012, sets the stage for the story. Loki encounters the Other and obtains the Tesseract, which he uses to steal and then wield its power through his scepter, enslaving agents like Selvig and Barton. In response, Fury reactivates the "Avengers Initiative" and recruits Romanoff to find Banner, leading to the formation of the Avengers team, including Rogers and Stark. As the story unfolds, Loki is confronted and briefly imprisoned, but he escapes after fatally wounding Coulson. He then opens a portal above New York City, allowing the Chitauri to invade. The Avengers work together to protect the city, with the Hulk ultimately incapacitating Loki. The team successfully defeats the Chitauri by destroying their mothership, and Romanoff uses Loki's scepter to close the wormhole. In the end, Loki is transported to Asgard to face justice, and the Other confers with his master about the failed attack on Earth.
