Raiders of the Lost Ark, released before Temple of Doom but set one year later, follows archaeologist Indiana Jones in 1936. After rival René Belloq takes a golden idol from him in Peru, U.S. Army Intelligence asks Indy to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can use its reputed power. He travels to Nepal, reunites with Marion Ravenwood, and obtains an important clue to the Ark's location. In Egypt, Indy and his friend Sallah uncover the Ark, but Belloq and the Nazis seize it. Indy pursues them, recovers it briefly, and follows them to a remote island. When Belloq opens the Ark, supernatural forces kill the Nazis while Indy and Marion survive by keeping their eyes shut. The U.S. government takes the Ark into custody and stores it in a secret warehouse. Temple of Doom is a prequel set in 1935, so these events have not yet occurred in Indy's personal chronology.

KNOW BEFORE WATCHING

A few things worth knowing first

CULTURE

British Raj

The British Raj was the period of direct British Crown rule over much of the Indian subcontinent from 1858 to 1947. Colonial administration shaped political institutions, economic life, and relations between British officials and local communities. The film is set within this unequal colonial context.

CULTURE

Thuggee

Thuggee refers to groups of robbers in historical India, often associated in British colonial accounts with strangulation and ritual murder. While organized banditry existed, historians dispute the colonial portrayal of a single, widespread religious cult. Adventure fiction has often exaggerated these accounts into stories of secretive, supernatural organizations.

CONCEPT

Lingam

A lingam, or linga, is an aniconic symbol associated with the Hindu deity Shiva. Often placed on a base called a yoni, it is revered in many Shaiva temples and worship practices. Its religious significance is broader and more complex than the way sacred stones are portrayed in adventure fiction.
