The Spy Who Loved Me begins with James Bond investigating the disappearance of a British and Soviet ballistic missile submarine. His search leads him to kill Soviet agent Sergei Barsov in Austria, and later, he meets KGB agent Major Anya Amasova in Egypt. They join forces to find the missing submarine plans, which are linked to Swedish shipping tycoon Karl Stromberg. As they work together, Bond and Amasova develop a romantic rivalry. Stromberg's plan is revealed: he intends to start a global nuclear war by launching nuclear missiles from the captured submarines, targeting Moscow and New York City. Bond and Amasova board the USS Wayne, but it's captured by Stromberg's tanker, Liparus. Bond frees the captured sailors, fights the Liparus crew, and tricks the submarines into firing at each other, destroying both vessels and Stromberg's crews. Stromberg is killed by Bond, and Jaws meets a watery demise. Bond and Amasova escape Atlantis in an escape pod as it's destroyed by torpedoes, and after a tense moment, Amasova spares Bond's life, and they share an intimate moment.
