STORY RECAP

What happened before Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone begins with Harry Potter, an orphaned boy, living with his cruel Muggle relatives, the Dursleys. On his eleventh birthday, Harry discovers he is a wizard and begins attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he meets his new best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The trio becomes entangled in a mystery surrounding the powerful Philosopher's Stone, which is being hidden at Hogwarts. They soon learn that Voldemort, the dark wizard who killed Harry's parents, is trying to return to power and is attempting to obtain the Stone. Harry and his friends successfully prevent Voldemort's return by protecting the Stone, and Harry learns about his mother's sacrifice, which has given him protection against harmful magic. As the story continues in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry returns to Hogwarts for his second year, despite warnings from Dobby, a house-elf, not to do so. Upon his return, Harry, Ron, and Hermione discover that the Chamber of Secrets has been reopened, unleashing a monster that is petrifying Muggle-born students. The trio works to uncover the truth behind the Chamber and the monster within, ultimately discovering that Ginny Weasley, Ron's sister, has been taken into the Chamber by Tom Riddle, a younger version of Voldemort, through his diary. Harry enters the Chamber, kills the basilisk, and destroys the diary, saving Ginny and ending the Chamber's reign of terror. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry learns that Sirius Black, a wizard believed to have betrayed his parents to Voldemort, has escaped from Azkaban prison. However, Harry soon discovers that Black is his godfather and is innocent of the crime. The true traitor is revealed to be Peter Pettigrew, a friend of Harry's father, who has been hiding in plain sight as Ron's pet rat, Scabbers. With the help of Hermione and Professor Lupin, Harry and Black work to clear Black's name and expose Pettigrew, ultimately succeeding in their mission. Along the way, Harry also learns to cast a Patronus Charm to defend against the soul-sucking Dementors that are terrorizing him. The story takes a darker turn in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, as Harry has a nightmare about Voldemort's return to power and the murder of a Muggle, Frank Bryce. The story unfolds with the Quidditch World Cup, where Death Eaters attack and the Dark Mark is cast, signaling Voldemort's return. Harry is unexpectedly selected as a participant in the Triwizard Tournament, a magical competition between three schools, and is forced to compete due to a magical binding contract. As the tournament progresses, Harry forms alliances and friendships with the other champions, including Cedric Diggory, who ultimately meets a tragic end at the hands of Voldemort's followers. The story concludes with Voldemort's successful return to power, Cedric's murder, and Harry's return to Hogwarts, where he informs Dumbledore of the events that transpired. The Ministry of Magic, however, denies Voldemort's return, setting the stage for a looming conflict between the wizarding world and the Dark Lord's followers.
