In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter is orphaned in 1981 and lives with the Dursleys until his eleventh birthday in 1991, when he receives letters from Hogwarts and meets Hagrid. Hagrid informs Harry about his parents and their fate at the hands of Lord Voldemort, and Harry learns he is famous in the wizarding world for surviving Voldemort's attempt on his life. At Hogwarts, Harry meets Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and they become friends after shared adventures, including rescuing Hermione from a mountain troll. As the year progresses, Harry becomes the Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team and suspects Snape of trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone to revive Voldemort. However, it is ultimately Professor Quirrell, possessed by Voldemort, who attempts to steal the Stone. Harry and his friends stop Quirrell, and when Quirrell tries to kill Harry, his touch incinerates Quirrell's body, and Voldemort's soul escapes. With the Stone destroyed, Harry wakes up in the hospital wing, where Dumbledore explains that Harry has twice overcome Voldemort due to his mother's sacrifice. The year ends with Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville earning house points for their heroism, and Gryffindor wins the House Cup, leaving Harry happy to have found a real home at Hogwarts.
