The story so far begins with Dr. No, where James Bond is sent to Jamaica to investigate the murder of Station Chief John Strangways. Bond meets Sylvia Trench and later encounters Quarrel, who is initially perceived as an enemy but is revealed to be working with the CIA to investigate radio jamming. They discover that Quarrel and Strangways obtained rock samples from Crab Key, an island controlled by Dr. No, a Chinese-German scientist with prosthetic metal hands working for SPECTRE. Dr. No's plan is to disrupt a Project Mercury space launch. Bond and Honey Ryder are captured and taken to Dr. No's base, where they are imprisoned. However, Bond escapes, infiltrates the control centre, and overloads the nuclear pool reactor, killing Dr. No. Bond and Ryder escape the island and are found adrift at sea by Felix Leiter, who has them towed by a Royal Navy ship. In a final move, Bond unhooks the towrope, setting their boat adrift again, marking the end of their current ordeal.
