In Godzilla Minus One, Kōichi Shikishima's life is turned upside down when Godzilla, mutated and empowered by the United States' nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll, attacks Odo Island and later Ginza, killing tens of thousands, including Kōichi's parents and later Noriko, who was taking care of her orphaned baby, Akiko. Kōichi, filled with a desire for revenge, joins forces with former naval engineer Kenji Noda to devise a plan to destroy the monster. As the story unfolds, Kōichi and his team set a trap for Godzilla, using Freon tanks and a suicide attack plan. Kōichi lures Godzilla to the trap, and after a intense confrontation, he crashes his plane into Godzilla's mouth, destroying its head and causing its body to tear apart. Kōichi manages to eject before the explosion and parachutes to safety. However, a chunk of Godzilla's flesh begins to regenerate as it sinks deeper into the ocean, leaving a sense of uncertainty.
