The story begins with Insidious, where Josh and Renai Lambert move into a new home with their sons Dalton and Foster, and infant daughter Kali. After Dalton falls into a coma, the family experiences paranormal events, and they soon discover that Dalton is trapped in a purgatory realm called "The Further." With the help of psychic Elise Rainier, Josh enters The Further and rescues Dalton, but the family's celebration is short-lived as Josh is revealed to be possessed by the old woman's ghost, and he kills Elise.
As the story continues in Insidious: Chapter 2, Lorraine summons Elise to help her son Josh, who is being haunted by a spirit in a black bridal gown. However, Elise is killed by Josh, who is possessed by the spirit of Parker Crane, a serial killer known as "The Bride in Black." The group discovers that Josh was attacked by Parker Crane, and his body begins to deteriorate. Dalton enters The Further to help his father, and with the help of Elise's spirit, Josh regains control of his body, and his memories are suppressed by Carl.
In Insidious: Chapter 3, the story takes a different turn as Quinn meets retired demonologist Elise Rainier to contact her deceased mother's spirit. Elise senses a malevolent force and warns Quinn not to contact her mother again, but Quinn experiences paranormal phenomena, including visions of the Man Who Can't Breathe. Elise enters the Further to investigate and discovers that the Man Who Can't Breathe is actually her deceased husband Jack in disguise. Quinn's deceased mother Lily appears in the Further and helps Quinn defeat the Man Who Can't Breathe, and Quinn escapes the Further. Elise forms a partnership with Specs and Tucker to help others with paranormal cases.
The story then unfolds in Insidious: The Last Key, where Elise investigates paranormal activity at her childhood home and discovers that her father Gerald had kidnapped numerous women and held them prisoner, and that Keyface had been controlling him. Elise is taken into the Further, where she is coerced by Keyface into hurting her father's spirit, but refuses. Keyface captures Imogen's soul and kills Gerald, but is defeated when Elise blows Christian's whistle, and her mother Audrey's spirit arrives. Audrey helps Elise, Melissa, and Imogen escape the Further, and Melissa's spirit returns to her body, saving her life. Elise makes amends with her mother's spirit and reconciles with her brother Christian.
Finally, in Insidious: The Red Door, Josh's memories of his experience in The Further are repressed, and he's divorced from Renai. Josh's mother Lorraine dies, and his relationship with his son Dalton is strained. Dalton starts drawing a picture of the red door used to enter The Further, and he accidentally goes into The Further again, seeing the red-faced demon. Dalton is trapped in the lair of the red-faced demon, and the demon possesses his body. Josh rescues Dalton, and the demon chases them to the red door. Josh stays behind to keep the red door shut, and Dalton returns to his body. The story concludes with Josh and Dalton reconciling, and Josh hints at a possible reunion with Renai, as the light over the sealed door to The Further flickers back on in a post-credits scene.
