In Dune, the story begins with Duke Leto Atreides being assigned to replace Baron Vladimir Harkonnen as the fiefholder of Arrakis, a move that Emperor Shaddam IV plots to use to his advantage in destroying House Atreides and retaking control of the planet. Paul, the son of Leto and Lady Jessica, undergoes a gom jabbar test and starts experiencing visions of the future, which becomes a crucial aspect of his character development. As House Atreides arrives on Arrakis, Paul is revered by the native Fremen, and an attempt on his life fails. However, the tranquility is short-lived, as Baron Harkonnen and Sardaukar troops invade, leading to the betrayal of Yueh and the incapacitation of Leto. Duncan Idaho sacrifices himself to enable Paul and Jessica to escape into the desert, where they eventually encounter Stilgar's tribe and meet Chani, a young woman from Paul's visions. Paul accepts a duel to the death, wins, and joins the Fremen to fulfill his father's goal of bringing peace to Arrakis. As the story progresses in Dune: Part Two, House Atreides is defeated by House Harkonnen, and Princess Irulan records her father's betrayal. Paul, Lady Jessica, and the Fremen reach Sietch Tabr, where Paul defeats Jamis in a duel, earning the Fremen's acceptance. Jessica drinks the Water of Life, gaining memories of past Reverend Mothers, and Paul adopts the Fremen names Usul and Muad'Dib, falls in love with Chani, and becomes a Fedaykin fighter. Feyd-Rautha replaces Rabban as the ruler of Arrakis and is evaluated by Lady Margot Fenring as a prospective Kwisatz Haderach. Paul reunites with Gurney Halleck, learns of hidden atomic warheads, and later drinks the Water of Life, gaining prescience and identifying a path to victory. He declares himself Lisan al Gaib, gains the southern Fremen's support, and leads an offensive against the Emperor's forces. The Fremen launch a successful attack, and Paul captures the Imperial court, executes Vladimir Harkonnen, and challenges Shaddam for the throne. After defeating Feyd-Rautha in a duel and demanding to marry Irulan, Paul's ascension to power is met with resistance from the Great Houses, leading him to order the Fremen to attack the orbiting fleet. The story concludes with Chani departing alone on a sandworm, setting the stage for the next phase of Paul's journey.
